The Role of Waste Bank-Based Waste Management Engineering in Women's Empowerment to Achieve SDGs 5 and 12

Abstract

Waste banks are one of the community-based waste management approaches that not only contribute to reducing waste generation, but also have the potential to be a means of empowering women. This study aims to analyze the waste management engineering model based on the Gondangan Sejahtera Waste Bank in women's empowerment to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 5 and 12. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method by collecting data through field observations, in-depth interviews, and questionnaires to waste bank administrators and customers. The data was analyzed in a qualitative descriptive manner, while the questionnaire results were used as supporting data through percentage analysis. The results of the study show that the waste management engineering model consists of six stages, namely waste sorting from sources, composting organic waste, depositing inorganic waste, recording transactions digitally, making creative products from recycling, and implementing a green circular economy. All stages are carried out with the active involvement of women as the main actors so as to increase women's participation, capacity, leadership, and economic independence. In addition, the implementation of waste sorting, reducing, reusing, and recycling encourages changes in people's behavior towards more responsible consumption and production. Thus, the waste management engineering model based on the Gondangan Sejahtera Waste Bank not only supports sustainable waste management, but also contributes to the achievement of SDGs 5 through women's empowerment and SDGs 12 through the application
