Abstract

Plastic is one of the biggest contributors to the problem as waste which is difficult to decompose naturally. Not only plastic waste, food waste in the form of rice as a staple food for Indonesian people is no less a contributor to food waste. This research aims to make bioplastics by utilizing rice waste with a mixture of chitosan and glycerol as a waste reduction solution. Bioplastics are made by mixing all the ingredients to make them homogeneous. Rice waste will be pretreated in the form of cleaning and drying to then be crushed and sifted into starch. Six samples were prepared with different variations of chitosan and glycerol (5:1, 1:0, 3:2, 2:1, 1:1, 2:3). The test consists of 4 tests: tensile strength test, elongation test, swelling power test and biodegradable test. The results showed that the optimal conditions for bioplastics were samples with a weight ratio of chitosan and glycerol 2:1 resulting in a tensile strength value of 6688.6 KPa, percent elongation of 6%, swelling power test of 6.57 and completely degraded within 3 days in the soil.
