Abstract
The development of reading interest and reading ability of students today is concerning. This is caused by the method given to students is less or even unpleasant for students. Some methods are result ariented, not process. This low interest in a reading makes student’s reading habits low and this also makes reading ability low. Every school should strive to improve student’s interest in reading by providing a variety of appropriate books, utilizing alumni cennections to provide readings, building an interesting and fun atmosphereand sharing with students. Simply put, reading interest is the potential to read voluntarily. The desire to read is not due to external factors as coercion to read, but because there are internal factors as encouragement to read. The internal factor is the desire to have a pleasant experience from reading activities. Interest in reading will become a reading habit if appropriate reading material is available to read and there is enough time to read. In reading habits, the motive is no longer just to get a pleasant emotional experience but also to get new information or knowledge. If the dominant motive is to fulfill the demands of education, then the habit of reading will drastically decrease in quantity immediately after graduating from school. In the era of the industrial revolution 4.0, it is necessary for students who have an interest and ability to read, think critically, communicate well, have the ability to use technology, be creative, innovate, be able to work together and have self-confidence. Teachers play an important role in fostering interest in reading in adolescents both through formal and nonformal education.
